Have we recently told you you need a crown, but you haven’t scheduled your appointment because you’re unsure? We understand that the prospect of getting a crown may be a bit intimidating, but if we have recommended you get one, it is important to act as soon as possible to prevent further damage to any teeth involved. Watch the video to learn more from Dr. Stryker about crowns, and keep reading for additional useful information.
What is a Crown?
As Dr. Stryker explained in the video, a crown’s job is to strengthen and protect your tooth. It is made of dental-grade ceramic, which is highly resistant to wear and looks just like natural tooth enamel. A crown goes around and over the damaged tooth, covering it completely to protect it from further harm. Once it is cemented in place, it is there for the long term and will look and function like a natural tooth.
Why Would You Need a Crown?
We use crowns for a number of reasons, including:
- To strengthen a tooth with a large cavity or existing filling
- To protect a tooth that has been damaged by trauma
- To complete a dental implant or bridge
- To finish a root canal procedure
- To create a more esthetic smile
In many cases, placing a crown over a tooth is the best way to save it. Whether it’s been broken, cracked, or badly deteriorated from decay, a crown will make the tooth strong enough to keep functioning for many more years.
What is the Alternative to a Crown?
If Dr. Stryker recommended a crown, there really is no better alternative to restore your tooth’s function. In most cases, the tooth cannot support a filling because it is too damaged and there isn’t enough healthy material left. Therefore, filling it would be a waste of your time and money, as it would not provide the strength and structure the tooth needs. The only solution is to place a crown.
