Sometimes, we all need a little reminder to get us back on track. When you do something every day, more than once a day, unhealthy habits might creep into your routine without you realizing it. Sometimes, we’re in a rush and don’t dedicate the attention a task deserves. Whatever the case may be, a little friendly reminder is what the doctor ordered!
We all know the drill. Proper dental hygiene keeps our mouths healthy and our smiles beautiful:
- Brush twice a day.
- Floss daily.
- Use mouthwash.
- See your dentist for regular examinations and cleanings.
Proper Brushing
The ADA recommends placing the toothbrush (manual or electric) against the gumline at a 45° angle and moving it back and forth in short strokes. Tilt the brush vertically and use up-and-down strokes to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth. Brush for two minutes twice a day. Use a soft-bristled brush, and remember to be gentle on your enamel and gums.
Proper Flossing
For optimal results, the ADA recommends using approximately 18 inches of dental floss. Wrap most of it around a middle finger and wrap what’s left around the middle finger of the other hand. Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers. Gently slide the floss between your teeth. When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C shape against one tooth. Gently rub the floss on the side of the tooth with an up-and-down motion, following the shape of the tooth. Repeat this process on all your teeth. Floss every day.
Mouthwash
Mouthwash can kill any bacteria that may be left behind after you brush and floss. It also helps keep your breath fresh.
Regular Appointments
Scheduling and coming in for regular dental examinations and cleanings is vital to maintaining your oral health. It will give our team the chance to check on any previous procedures or issues you had and prevent and detect problems.
Communication Is Key
The more questions you ask us, the more you tell us about how you feel and what your concerns are, the better oral care we can provide. Ask us for a demonstration on how to brush and floss correctly, talk about your anxieties, and tell us when something doesn’t feel right.
Don’t Ignore Pain
Contact us if you have dental pain. It might be nothing, but it might be something. The sooner we know, the better.
Good Habits Make for Good Oral Health
Drink water, limit sugary and acidic foods, keep up your dental hygiene routine, follow aftercare instructions, exercise, and get a good night’s sleep.
